This may seem like an odd thing to have in a creative arts website. My work on social change is not creation from nothing--but then, what art truly is more than a drawing together of elements that are already in existance?
Every major project that I do is based on the foundation of what you could call my personal mission statement, my drive to save the world. It's a tall order, but the more I learn, the more I find that there is no way I can turn my back on this mess. And of course I am not alone. There are people all over the planet working desperately toward the same goals of finding solutions to our situation.
The world is in trouble. It has been for some time, but it is only recently that the depth and scope of the problems that face us have begun to be understood. We are living in amazing (if terrifying) times! Our species is in the process of a major maturation; an enlightenment. We are learning--painfully and dangerously, but we ARE learning--how intimately connected we are with every aspect of our planet and with each other.
The closest I have to an answer to the troubles of the world is that we need to connect. We need to connect to other people, to gain perspectives, share experiences, and develop compassion. We need to connect to the reality of what is going on in the world and react to it with recognition that it affects us. We need to connect to the wonders of our planet, to learn to enjoy and cherish the earth through our direct connection to it.
My art, music, poetry, everything I do is with a goal of creating connections. Even when not directly related to social change, art that speaks truth to someone's soul breaks down isolation and connects that person to a common understanding. My career is in the public aquarium field, where I can help people directly experience the aquatic world; one of the least accessible and most incredible aspects of the ecosystem we share. I also spend a lot of my spare time studying various aspects of this all-encompassing subject of world-saving. I hope to share some of my discoveries here. I am also putting together a list some of the materials that I have found most helpful in increasing my understanding of our problems and solutions. |
